Mesothelioma Explained

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs, called the pleura. Many people call it a pleural cancer for that reason. It can also appear in the lining of the intestines and in the lining around the heart, but these instances are much rarer. In the case of mesothelioma in the heart lining, there is really very little that can be done. The intestinal mesothelioma is also often found to have a poor prognosis because mesothelioma spreads very fast, and it can attack other organs before the person ever knows that it’s there. Overall, the most common type of mesothelioma – which is still a rare cancer – that is found in the lungs is the most treatable. It comes from the inhalation of asbestos fibers, which are very tiny. They lodge in the lungs and irritate the lining. Eventually, they can result in tumors.

Once mesothelioma starts to cause symptoms it’s already far advanced and can be difficult to treat. It’s much better to catch it before it gets to that point. People who have been exposed to asbestos in the past should see their doctor in order to have any necessary tests done. They should also follow their doctor’s advice about how often they should have specific tests in order to catch mesothelioma as early as possible if it develops. If it’s caught early a person can be treated much more easily and his or her prognosis is a lot better than someone who has symptoms.
